Here's the recipe that worked well for us:
"Good Biscuits"
from The Purefoy Hotel Cookbook
2 c. flour
4 t. baking powder
2 T. butter + 2 T. shortening
1/2 t. salt
1 t. sugar
1 c. milk
Sift dry ingredients together; add shortening and mix in thoroughly with fork. Add liquid to make soft dough. Turn out on floured board and toss lightly until outside looks smooth. Roll out 1/2 inch thick. Cut with floured biscuit cutter. Place on greased pan. Bake in hot oven (475 F) about 12 minutes. Makes 12-16 biscuits. If buttermilk is used, add 1/2 t. soda to recipe.
